Again, I’m counting this as a new tattoo since it was not part of the original design.

This tattoo was one of the more relaxing pieces that I have done. It never had a stressful moment and it made me hope that I can be this relaxed during all future sessions.

The inspiration of this piece came from both a client sketch and the iconic image of Guadalupe. I used a stencil as a placement guide, but all of the flames were free-handed by using a bloodline (see the image notes). Bloodlining is the act of tattooing without ink to create a scratch on the skin for which to follow. It’s a fantastic technique for working on designs that do not have a definitive outline to them.

There is more work planned for the future of this piece which is why the bottom of the oval was left open. Oh, and I got to fix some niggly bits on the man that had been bugging me.

Lesson learned today: chill the fuck out and work with intention. Have a sure and steady hand with every movement. Push, grab and stretch as needed and don’t worry about grabbing too hard.

Unfortunately, This photo makes the piece appear to be crooked on the arm. I think it was the angle at which I shot it. The client has a larger arm which rounds out some of the shoulder and elbow definition. I certainly stepped back during the stencil process to ensure everything was aligned on the body as well as with itself so I’m comfortable with the placement.
